Ultrasonic Reactor method for Biodiesel production
Biodiesel production is the process of producing the biofuel, biodiesel, through the chemical reactions transesterification and esterification. This involves vegetable or animal fats and oils being reacted with short-chain alcohols (typically methanol or ethanol).
In the ultrasonic reactor method, the ultrasonic waves cause the reaction mixture to produce and collapse bubbles constantly. This cavitation provides simultaneously the mixing and heating required to carry out the transesterification process. Thus using an ultrasonic reactor for biodiesel production drastically reduces the reaction time, reaction temperatures, and energy input. Hence the process of transesterification can run inline rather than using the time consuming batch processing. Industrial scale ultrasonic devices allow for the industrial scale processing of several thousand barrels per day.
Ultrasound is a useful tool to mix liquids that tend to separate. In biodiesel production, adequate mixing is required to create sufficient contact between the vegetable oil/animal fat and alcohol, especially at the beginning of the reaction. Ultrasonic waves cause intense mixing so that the reaction can proceed at a much faster rate.
Ultrasound transfers energy into fluid and creates violent vibrations, which form cavitation bubbles. As the bubbles burst, a sudden contraction of the fluid occurs, and the ingredients are mixed in the area of the bubbles. Such a high-energy action in liquid can considerably increase the reactivity of the reactant mixture and shorten the reaction time without involving elevated temperatures. In fact, this reaction can be achieved at or slightly above ambient temperature. Because there is no need to heat the mixture, energy may be saved.
Research has shown that ultrasound can be effectively used in the production of biodiesel (e.g., Sarma et al., 2008; Hanh et al., 2008; Teixeira et al., 2009). The ultrasound processing results in similar yields of biodiesel with a much shortened reaction time compared to the conventional stirred-tank procedure.
Ultrasound can be a good choice for small producers (up to 2 million gallons per year capacity), who may only need one or two ultrasound probes per reactor vessel. However, using ultrasound in large-scale processing may be challenging because many ultrasound probes would be needed to reach every area of the reactant mixture.

Ultrasonic reactors for the cavitational mixing of oil with methanol in biodiesel production. The intense ultrasonic agitation reduces the methanol droplet size – leading to an increase in contact surface area. This boosts the reaction speed and the biodiesel yield and quality significantly.
Ultrasonic reactors reduce the mixing time to approx. 10 to 30sec. This allows for an in-line installation right before the separation tank.
By creating molecular cavitation our reactors ensure that all the feedstock, methanol and catalyst are homogeneously emulsified and come to a complete reaction, increasing yields to >99%. The reactor units operate on both base transesterification and acid esterification, with the most impressive results being seen on the acid esterification reaction.

Also, in-line ultrasonic reactor can change the production from batch processing to continuous flow processing and achieve a biodiesel yield over 97%.
Ultrasonication can also reduce the seperation time from 5 to 10 hours into 1 hour or less. The amount of catalyst and alcohol are reduced to 15 ~35% due to increase the chemical activity during at cavitation process. The resulted byproduct of glycerin can be increased in purity.
