Vys\u00edla\u010d v senzoru generuje kr\u00e1tk\u00e9 impulsy ultrazvukov\u00fdch vln, kter\u00e9 se \u0161\u00ed\u0159\u00ed okoln\u00edm prost\u0159ed\u00edm.  Tyto vlny se odraz\u00ed od p\u0159ek\u00e1\u017eky a vr\u00e1t\u00ed se zp\u011bt k p\u0159ij\u00edma\u010di v senzoru.  \u010cas, kter\u00fd uplyne mezi vysl\u00e1n\u00edm impulsu a p\u0159ijet\u00edm odra\u017een\u00e9 vlny, se vyu\u017e\u00edv\u00e1 k v\u00fdpo\u010dtu vzd\u00e1lenosti k p\u0159ek\u00e1\u017ece.  Rychlost \u0161\u00ed\u0159en\u00ed zvuku ve vzduchu (p\u0159ibli\u017en\u011b 343 m\/s p\u0159i 20 \u00b0C) je zn\u00e1m\u00e1 konstanta, a proto je v\u00fdpo\u010det vzd\u00e1lenosti relativn\u011b jednoduch\u00fd:  Vzd\u00e1lenost = (Rychlost zvuku \u00d7 \u010cas) \/ 2.
