Ultrasonic energy is measured in watts per gallon (WPG). The amount of WPG needed to properly clean items varies, depending on the tank’s size and the level of cleaning that will be done. Lower capacity tanks require higher amounts of WPG while higher capacity tanks require lower amounts of WPG. An ultrasonic cleaner with a tank that has a capacity of one gallon to two gallons can produce an ultrasonic power that is as high as 200 WPG. For a tank that has a capacity of 2,000 gallons, 5-7 WPG is enough to provide superb cleaning. The bigger the tank is, the lower the energy density it needs to clean properly. For more complicated cleaning, higher energy density is needed. It is very important to use the appropriate ultrasonic power because an excessively high amount of it could cause cavitation erosion. Metals that are soft, such as brass and aluminum, are prone to cavitation erosion.
