To have one’s teeth cleaned and polished by a dentist can seem extremely daunting and nerve wrecking. The element of pain involved in dental procedures makes dental appointments seem like torture. Since the mouth is a very sensitive area, every move made by the dentist during the check up urges the patient to flee from the chair. However, there is a pain free process of doing this by a procedure known as the ultrasonic cleaning process. Not only is it pain free, but it also tends to provide with a more thorough cleaning procedure compared to that of a manual one.
The concept of ultrasonic cleaning dates back to the 1950’s where this process was first initiated to clean parts of an aircraft, rather than teeth. Hence this process is not very new. Ultrasonic cleaning was later applied to dental cleaning processes in a much later stage. It is not only very effective in generating quality results, but also a very cost effective way for dentists to clean the teeth of the patients.
How it works
The cleaning process through ultrasonic cleaning is conducted by the sound waves generated by the scaler tip, which is extremely thin. When the tip is applied towards the area needing treatment, the sound waves powerfully break away pieces of tartar and plaque. Hardened pieces of plaque, known as calculus are also very effectively cleaned away by the sound waves and the debris is washed away from the water coming from the scaler. Unlike the manual approach, the ultrasonic cleaning technique does not damage the enamel of the teeth and patients experience a pain free cleaning because the sound waves are merely bounced back.
People with gum diseases
Since the sound waves generated by the scaler do not put on any unnecessary pressure on the teeth, this process is highly beneficial for those patients who experience gum problems. When the scaler is held towards the teeth requiring cleaning, the sound waves easily reach below the gum line to remove the unwanted plaque and tartar from that region, making sure that the teeth are not damaged. Since patients having gum diseases tend to have loose teeth as they are not secure below the gum line, this technique is far more effective than the manual one.
Ultrasonic cleaning is a much advanced method of cleaning teeth because the thin size of the scaler helps to reach those areas of the mouth which could not be reached by dentists manually. Also, the process is less time consuming and helps to prevent the occurrences of gingivitis and periodontal diseases as well. This method has also been found effective in cleaning tough stains caused by drinking tea, coffee or the stains of nicotine which could not have been removed by a manual process previously.
This, it can be concluded that the ultrasonic cleaning process is a much more effective and a painless way of having dental cleaning done. It is much safer as it helps to prevent the occurrences of any diseases in the future and generates long term benefits. Patients feel at ease when they do not experience any discomfort and get the process conducted in a smaller time frame.
