Surface tension plays an important role in ultrasonic cleaning. It affects the formation of cavitation bubbles. The lower the surface tension is, the more cavitation bubbles are formed. The implosion of cavitation bubbles removes the contaminants from the items in the ultrasonic cleaner’s tank. The more cavitation bubbles there are, the cleaner the items will be. And so, it is important that the ultrasonic cleaning solution has a low surface tension.
There are two ways to lower the surface tension of liquid.
- One way is by using a cleaning solution that contains surfactants. Surfactants are substances that make the surface tension of liquid low.
- Surface tension can also be reduced by heating the liquid.
