How to increase humidity

by Jessie Wong / Friday, 21 April 2023 / Published in Ultrasonic Technology

Maintaining proper indoor humidity levels is essential for comfort, health, and the preservation of your home and belongings. Low humidity can lead to dry skin, irritated respiratory systems, cracked wooden furniture, and even difficulty sleeping. To combat these issues, increasing humidity in your living space becomes essential, particularly during the winter season or in dry climates. Here are some effective and practical methods to raise the humidity levels in your home.

1. Use a Humidifier

One of the most effective ways to increase humidity is by using a humidifier. These devices emit moisture into the air, helping maintain optimal indoor humidity levels. Ultrasonic humidifiers, such as those offered by Beijing Ultrasonic, are particularly popular due to their energy efficiency, quiet operation, and ability to produce a fine mist of water vapor. When selecting a humidifier, consider the size of your room to ensure you choose a model with sufficient capacity. Regularly clean and maintain the humidifier to prevent mold and bacteria buildup.

2. Add Indoor Plants

Houseplants can naturally increase indoor humidity through a process called transpiration. As plants absorb water through their roots, they release moisture into the air through their leaves. Some highly effective humidity-boosting plants include peace lilies, ferns, and spider plants. Grouping several plants together in one area can amplify the humidity effect. Additionally, placing a tray of water beneath or around the plants can further enhance moisture levels as the water evaporates.

3. Place Water Bowls Around the House

Positioning bowls or vases of water around your home is a simple yet effective way to elevate humidity. As the water evaporates, it releases moisture into the air. To speed up evaporation, place the bowls near heat sources such as radiators, heaters, or sunny windows. Another option is to place decorative water features, such as fountains, which not only add humidity but also create a soothing ambiance.

4. Air-Dry Clothes Indoors

Instead of using a dryer, hang your freshly washed clothes inside your home. As the water from the clothes evaporates, it increases humidity levels. This method is particularly effective during the winter months when indoor heating can dry out the air. To maximize effectiveness, position the clothes near radiators or in rooms where dry air is most problematic.

5. Boil Water or Cook More Often

Cooking on the stovetop, especially boiling water or making soups and stews, can release a significant amount of moisture into the air. Additionally, leaving pots of hot water to cool on the stove after cooking can further increase humidity. Consider using this opportunity to prepare warm meals and beverages, which can be both comforting and functional in maintaining indoor moisture.

6. Incorporate a Fish Tank or Aquarium

Installing a fish tank or aquarium in your home can help maintain humidity levels. The water from the tank evaporates slowly, adding moisture to the air. For added benefits, opt for an open-top aquarium that allows for greater evaporation. Keep in mind that regular maintenance of the aquarium is necessary to ensure a healthy environment for your aquatic pets.

7. Utilize Damp Towels or Sponges

Wet towels or sponges can act as excellent moisture sources. Simply hang damp towels on a drying rack or place wet sponges in open spaces. As they dry, they release moisture into the air. This method is budget-friendly and particularly useful in smaller rooms or spaces. For an added touch, use hot water to accelerate evaporation.

8. Open Bathroom Doors After Showering

The steam from a hot shower can significantly increase humidity in your home. To take advantage of this, leave the bathroom door open after you shower and let the steam escape into adjacent rooms. If possible, turn off the bathroom fan to prevent the moisture from being vented outside. This simple step can be especially effective in colder months when indoor air tends to be dry.

9. Seal Gaps and Cracks in Your Home

While not a direct way to introduce humidity, sealing gaps and cracks in your doors, windows, and walls can help retain the moisture already present in your home. Drafty windows and poorly insulated areas allow moisture to escape, making it harder to maintain optimal humidity levels. Use weatherstripping, caulk, or insulation materials to seal these areas and keep your indoor environment balanced.

10. Monitor and Maintain Optimal Humidity Levels

Maintaining the right humidity level is crucial for comfort and health. The ideal indoor relative humidity typically ranges between 30% and 50%. To monitor these levels, invest in a hygrometer, a small and inexpensive device that measures humidity. If you find your home is consistently below the recommended range, combine multiple methods mentioned above for more effective results.

Method Ease of Implementation Effectiveness Cost
Use a Humidifier Easy High Medium to High
Add Indoor Plants Easy Medium Low to Medium
Place Water Bowls Very Easy Low to Medium Low
Air-Dry Clothes Indoors Easy Medium Low
Boil Water or Cook More Often Easy Medium Low
Incorporate a Fish Tank Moderate Medium Medium to High
Utilize Damp Towels or Sponges Very Easy Low to Medium Low
Open Bathroom Doors After Showering Very Easy Medium Low
Seal Gaps and Cracks Moderate Medium Low to Medium
Monitor Humidity Levels Easy Essential Low

Increasing humidity in your home is not only beneficial for your health but also for the longevity of your furniture, flooring, and overall comfort. From using a high-quality ultrasonic humidifier like those from Beijing Ultrasonic to simple adjustments such as air-drying clothes indoors or placing water bowls around your home, there are plenty of easy and effective ways to raise humidity levels. By employing these strategies and monitoring your indoor environment with a hygrometer, you can achieve a healthier and more comfortable living space year-round.
