Nebulizers are an indispensable item for many people who are suffering from respiratory diseases. As years go by and the world becomes more polluted, more and more people experience respiratory problems. Lots of people nowadays regardless of age, gender, and ethnicity have breathing difficulties.
Breathing difficulty should never be taken lightly. A person who is having breathing problems would not have enough oxygen in his or her system. Oxygen is very important in the proper functioning of the human body and brain. If there is not enough oxygen in a person’s system, his or her organs would not function properly. And when there is absolutely no oxygen in a person’s system, he or she will suffer permanent brain damage within a few minutes and death would soon follow. Fortunately, there are many ways to fight respiratory diseases. There are devices that help a person to breathe. When it comes to these devices, there is no doubt that nebulizers are among the top choices.
Lots of people with respiratory problems, especially those who have severe asthma, prefer nebulizers over other devices because nebulizers effectively treat asthma and other diseases of the respiratory system. Young and old people alike can use nebulizers. Some people whose asthma is severe cannot use inhalers. With the help of nebulizers, these people can effectively treat their condition.
Nebulizers supply people who have a respiratory disease like asthma with their very much needed medicine. The medicine, which is originally in liquid form, is transferred from the device to the lungs in vapor form. The nebulizer contains a mechanism that converts the medicine into vapor.
There are two main types of nebulizers. These are compressed-air nebulizers and ultrasonic nebulizers.
1. Compressed-air nebulizer, as its name suggests, uses compressed air to transport medicine to the lungs. Also called jet nebulizer or atomizer, this device has a compressor that converts medicated solution into vapors. It is the more preferred type for medicines in suspension. Nebulizers that are found in hospitals are usually jet nebulizers. These are generally cheaper than the other type. The downside of a jet nebulizer is its noise and weight. The compressor, aside from being heavy, produces a loud sound.
2. An ultrasonic nebulizer, on the other hand, contains a transducer instead of a compressor. The transducer is a crystal. It produces ultrasonic sound waves that convert the medicated liquid into vapors. Ultrasonic nebulizers are quiet. The sound levels of the sound waves are higher than what human ears can detect. Also, because they do not have a compressor, ultrasonic nebulizers are not heavy. There are even portable ultrasonic nebulizers that are battery operated. The downside of ultrasonic nebulizers is they are not compatible with some medicines for asthma and other respiratory diseases. There are medicines that become ineffective when they are turned into mist using ultrasonic sound waves. Some could even cause negative effects to the patient.
Nowadays, people with asthma and other respiratory disorders can choose from many kinds of nebulizers. There are many types of portable nebulizers that can be used at home or brought anywhere the patient wants to. There are tabletop nebulizers that use electricity. There are also ultra portable types that run on batteries. So wherever people with respiratory diseases are, whether they are in the hospital, at home, or out with friends, they can get relief from breathing problems.
