The process of cleaning delicate items using multiple ultrasonic waves and a cleaning solution along with it is known as ultrasonic cleaning.
This process of cleaning has various uses typically in the situations where risk damage from other cleaning methods might occur. Some of the common examples of its applications are associated with watch-makers, jewelry makers, manufacturers of optical lens along with bunch of other everyday applications in medicine and industry. A variety of different shapes and sizes can be cleaned using this process. It is also particularly effective in cleaning materials where cracks or crevices or any other kinds of holes are involved and which are physically impossible to clean otherwise. The disassembly of the component parts is also not required by this which speeds up the process to a great extent.
This process is also used for many non absorbent materials which are hard as well and that aren’t chemically attacked by the solvents used. Examples are metals and plastics. It is particularly more effecting in eliminating contaminants such as bacteria, dust, mud, grease oil, polishing compounds or any other among others.
The high frequency sound waves are used to bombard the cleaning solution which is beyond the range of human hearing capability. An ultrasonic transducer is lowered into the cleaning solution to achieve this. In some cases, the transducer is built into the cleaning machine itself.
Compressions are caused by the sound waves in the cleaning solution which cause cavitation bubbles to appear within the solution. These bubbles collapse and agitate the pollutants and weaken their bonds with the item and hence detach. The collapse of the bubbles doesn’t affect the item that is being cleaned due to the tiny effect it has.
The bubble size can be controlled accurately. This can be achieved as the size of the bubbles depends upon the frequency of the wave passing through the solution. Greater bubble size can be achieved by using a smaller frequency. This makes the cleaning of delicate items greatly accurate with damaging it at all. The cleaning agents that are considered to be harsh are used in this process in much lower concentrations which greatly diminishes any damage to the item.
